Although two men in their fifties had been seriously injured, there were no reported deaths. The strong quake with a measured 7.1 struck sometime around 4:30 in the morning yesterday. One of the men was injured because a chimney had fallen on him. The second man had been cut by glass. There were a few buildings that had been completely destroyed, while the sewer and water mains had ruptured and the power had shut-off. Leaks in the gas system had also been reported. 5.0 aftershocks have also been rocking the city throughout the day. The policemen had closed off the entire center of the city because many looters had begun damaging the shops there. The damages for the quake could hit up to 1.5 billion dollars.

Because the quake had hit before dawn, there weren’t many people on the streets as the buildings cam crashing down. They ended up crushing some parked cars and covering the roads with broken glass. The quake had also caused the airport, and the rail-lines to close for safety reasons and to check for any potential damage that had occurred there. The city also declared a state of emergency and people were told to keep away from the buildings because they might collapse. There are still fears that the buildings are not sturdy enough to withstand anymore aftershocks. The Civil Defense Minister went on to say that the country had been blessed and was lucking for evading many causalities. The Prime Minister applauded the city’s ability to stay calm in such a crisis, but he did acknowledge the looting and calling them “sad” acts.

WASHINGTON – The Republican Party is embroiled in a bitter fight to regain its conservative identity. As more grass-root conservatives are taking victory in states’ primaries, Democrats are hoping to cash in on the opportunity. Tuesday, primary voters already demonstrated disdain for career politicians by electing GOP political newbie Rick Scott, unseating Florida’s Attorney General and long-time congressman, Bill McCollum. A similar scenario played out in Alaska, as incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski may have been defeated by outsider Joe Miller, the outcome hinging upon the election’s absentee ballot results.
The GOP will most likely recover from its internal struggles in traditionally conservative states, like Utah and Alaska, even if veteran senators are booted from office. However, in more middle-ground states, like Nevada, Florida and possibly even Kentucky, desperate Democrats may try to use this to their advantage, painting the tea party-backed GOP candidates as too extreme.
Like Sen. Bob Bennett, (R-Utah), if Murkowski is handed the political pink slip by traditional conservative voters, other Republican candidates are still likely to take office come November. However, Sen. Mitch McConnell, (R-Ky) will face more staunch members who are less likely to negotiate on their principles. A total conservative take over is not cast iron, as demonstrated by Sen. John McCain who was re-nominated in Arizona, even though he faced an even more conservative opponent, J.D. Hayworth. It is the key battleground states, like Nevada and Florida that could be the GOP’s Achilles heel in November if they do not seize the right opportunities. That just might be the silver lining the Democrats are hoping for.

GENEVA- On Wednesday, a U.S. Air force flight crew flew the huge C-5M Super Galaxy aircraft needed to carry the $2 billion complex scientific device that is expected to initiate a new era in exploration of elemental particles such as anti-matter. Wednesday’s flight is the final step on the 8.3 ton or 7.5 metric ton engineering marvel named the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer. It left Geneva airport ahead of schedule on Wednesday, destined for NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, where it will be the payload in the final space shuttle flight. The cargo is quite a change from the helicopters and tanks the giant C-5M Super Galaxy flies world-wide. It was the only aircraft capable of carrying the machine–not even a jumbo-jet 747 could load it. So the officials at CERN (European Center for Nuclear Research) asked for help from U.S. Air Force officials. At the last minute some of the shipping crate had to be chopped off before it would fit in even the Super Galaxy’s cargo hold. According to Sam Ting, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor of physics and Noble laureate, the incredibly complex and costly Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer will become part of the International Space Station. For the next 20 years scientists expect the machine to collect previously elusive evidence of dark matter, anti-matter and other exotic elemental particles. The AMS detector is part of a massive investment in exploring the basic particles of all creation that include the world’s largest collider, CERN’s Hadron Collider built in an underground site straddling the Swiss-French border. The Hadron Collider has the power to simulate conditions that scientists believe existed in the first instant after the “Big Bang” when the entire universe came into existence. This knowledge could help reveal some of the mysteries of the creation of the universe, its present composition and future.

Mexico City – The gruesome discovery of 6 dozen slain migrants from Latin America on a piece of property only a short way south of the American/Mexican border has provided a grisly reminder about the inhuman nature of migrant trafficking in a nation dominated by the cartels who sustain America’s thirst for illegal drugs. An Ecuadorean who escaped wounded in the state of Tamaulipas told those in authority that their abductors named themselves Zetas, a gang who virtually run some parts of the state so thoroughly that many Mexicans avoid traveling highways through there. Migrants going the long haul up Mexico to the U.S.A. have for years faced such threats as extortion, theft, and violence. But now reports are coming in about abductions en masse of migrants, who are then extorted into giving phone numbers for relatives in the U.S.A. or their home country for the purpose of demanding ransom for their captors. Teresa Delagadillo, a worker at Casa San Jaun Deigo shelter in the city of Matamoros, just across the river from Brownsville, TX, says she frequently gets wind of stories about violent gangs abducting and brutalizing migrants for purposes of extortion, but has never heard a tale as horrific as the massacre discovered this week. In a report released in April, Amnesty International said the plight of thousands of Latin American migrants crossing Mexico bound for the U.S.A. was a major crisis of human rights. Their journey was named one of the world’s most dangerous by the report, and report went on to add that an incalculable number of migrants simply disappear and are never heard from again every year. The Mexican government has confirmed 7 instances of the cartels abducting migrant groups this year said an official from a think tank for the study of immigration.

August 25, 2010, Seoul: On Wednesday, South Korea denied reports made by the media that it was promising to make many “concessions” to the United States in the discussion over bilateral free trade agreemeents. according to the Yonhap News Agency. Also, The Washington Post has reported that President of the U.S., Barak Obama has finally won the commitment from Lee Myung-bak, the South Korean President, for making “more concessions” and also desires a future discussion on possible amendments and revisions when they finally meet in Seoul this coming Novement. “It is not true, S. Korea has not made such commitments to the U.S.,” stated Choi Seok Young, who is the deputy Minister of trade. These two countries signed the free trade agreement or FTA in early 2007 after almost two years of contentious negotiations, but it still aways the ratification from the legislature from both of these countries. After meeting with Lee last month in Canada, Obama state he hoped witness the resolution of such a contetious issue before the end of the years in order for Congress to approve of the agreement in time for next year. Several lawmakers in the United States have started complaints regarding the agreements provisions on automobiles–which these Congressmen claim does little to take done the barries made imposed on US imports. The United States also desire that South Korea lift its restrictions of shipments of beef. S. Korea will only import beef from cattle that is less than 30 months old because they fear mad cow disease. United States has only recored three case of this disease from 2003 to 2006. As a result, Seoul has banned any important of US made beef from 2003 until they began to resume in 2008.

Residents were shaken and all that was left was a land strip of lots smoldering in Ashland, Oregon. While dark smoke and fire debris coming from homes that were destroyed settled over the city on Tuesday evening, the residents stayed on high alert as Firefighters monitored the area, keeping watch on either side of Interstate Highway Number 5 where the fire started.

According to Margueritte Hickman who serves as the public information officer of the Ashland Fire department, the fire moved very quickly and presented challenges to the available resources. The fire was frustrating to the public and Hickman expresses her sympathy to those who lost homes during the fire. According to Hickman, firefighters did put forth their best efforts to control the blaze. Homes that burned were located in the 800 and the 900 block of the street, Oak Knoll Drive. Most homes were located on the freeway side of the street and had odd numbered addresses. In addition to the homes that burned, there were three other homes damaged in the fire.

Fortunately, even with all the damage, there were no reported injuries with the fire. Fires that had jumped west of the freeway were fully contained by 6:00 p.m. and on the east were contained by 8:30 the same evening. First fire reports were from brittle brush located behind the Arco service station located on Ashland Street at approximately 4:50 p.m. This is an area where transients often camp. The official cause of this fire is still being investigated according to officials.

COPIAPO, August 25, 2010 Wednesday (AFP) – Officials from Chili announced Wednesday that the miners trapped deep below the surface, may have to remain there for months before they can be rescued. These 33 miners trapped in a shaft located 700 meters (2,300 feet) underground, received the news of the delay from Jaime Manalich, the country’s Health Minister. The miners reportedly received the news calmly, but there is concern they might eventually begin suffering from anguish, depression, and severe discomfort.

Officials initially withheld the news about the delayed rescue from the miners fearing their psychological response to the thought of being stuck in a small, musty, and dark shelter for an extended period. The miner’s only current lifeline connection to the surface is a small hole that is providing a passageway for air, water, food, and communication.

The Chilean government delivered the news to the miners in addition to presenting a designated program to help the 33 trapped miners cope physically and emotionally with their extended confinement. One of the main strategies of the plan calls for each miner to be fit and thin enough to pass through the narrow escape shaft currently under constructed for the trapped victims. The shaft measures 26 inches (66 centimeters) in diameter, which is about the size of a bike tire rim. The Chilean officials have been very careful in presenting the situation to these trapped miners, in light of the long delay they will have to endure and the fact that late Tuesday, the miners already had urgently requested an earlier rescue date.

A woman, only twenty-two, from Mexico was crowned Miss Universe after stating to the audience that it is important that we teach our kids values from our families. From Guadalajara, Jimen Navarettem was number one during the interview part of the pageant and the very last of the eighty-three contestants in the pageant there at Las Vegas on the strip. She stated at a conference after the pageant that she would like to give her parents a big hug. She also stated that they had sacrificed a lot and put forth a lot of effort for her to come this far. She wore a dress with a single strap. As she walked this red gown flowed behind her during the evening gown part of the competition. She wore a violet bikini during the swimsuit part of the competition. She strutted confidently across the stage smiling. She was asked during the competition how she felt about Internet use and children using it unsupervised. This question came from Evan Lysacek, and Olympic figure skater. Navarrete answered that it is necessary for parents to watch their children closely and be careful. She stated that internet is a very necessary tool and indespensable for todays children. Parents need to make sure that they are teaching their children the values that they were taught. Navarrete answered her questions through the use of an interpretor. Navarrete stated that she was very surprised to win. She was the second Miss Universe to be crowned from Mexico. The first Miss Universe from Mexico was Lupita Jones crowned in 1991. Navarrete takes the crown from the 2009 Miss Universe Stefania Fernandez from Venezuela. The crowning of Navarrete caused Venezuela to lose out on three consecutive victories for Miss Universe.

Alberto Lim, the Tourism Secretary of the Philippines, admitted that his government “could have handled (the hostage situation) better.” Lim similarly went and told Bloomberg Television that the situation became more chaotic when the hostage-taker’s brother came to the scene. Essentially, the brother was said to have skipped through the police lines and made a big scene resulting to him being arrested and handcuffed by the police. Lim claimed that the hostage taker was indeed monitoring the incident on television inside the bus and that aggravated the situation.

Liu Jianchao, the Chinese Ambassador to Manila, met on Tuesday with the top officials of the Philippines including President Benigno `Noynoy’ Aquino. Accoding to Edwin Lacierda, the Presidential spokesman, said that President Aquino assured a swift and proper investigation on the hostage incident and advised that all measures will be taken in order to prevent any similar incidents from happening in the future.

Lacierda also added that the Chinese Ambassador requested that the Philippine government take solid measures in order to safeguard Chinese tourists. He also explained that President Aquino had called Donald Tsang, Hong Kong Chief Executive, on Tuesday immediately after Tsang expressed his criticism of the rescue performed on the hostages on Monday. Lacierda adds that President Aquino expressed deep sorrow and regret for the hostage incident.

Just recently a licensing system used to ensure that Android Apps were being properly downloaded has gotten hacked, Google has been recently looking into the issue. In response to concerns that its licensing system is too easy to breach, Google had introduced an improved licensing system that is meant to make it harder to dowload Android Apps illegally or without authorization. However according to investigations undertaken by Android police this new licensing system has its own flaws. With just basic amounts of coding knowledge anyone can bypass the new licensing system and illegally dowload apps. The new licensing server was defended by Tim Bray, Google’s phone developer, on one of his blog posts stating that it is “never possible” to attain 100% software piracy protection on a system that runs third-partay codes. Without doubt the new server is an upgrade from the old system used by the Android market according to Bray. A new tool that the new server uses to help developer prevent the pirating of their apps is to “obfuscate” their sample code that is used by the server for authentication. This makes it considerably harder for those attempting to steal an application to find the important bits of code used to bypass authentication processes. Bray commented that they will later release additional information on how to access such tools.
